Norms of assertion and communication in social networks
Epistemologists canbedivided into twocamps: thosewho think that nothing short of certainty or (subjective) probability 1 can warrant assertion and those who disagree with this claim. This paper addressed this issue by inquiring into the problem of setting the probability threshold required for assertion in such a way that that the social epistemic good is maximized, where the latter is taken to...
متن کاملKnowledge and other norms for assertion , action , and belief : A teleological account
Here I advance a unified account of the structure of the epistemic normativity of assertion, action, and belief. According to my Teleological Account, all of these are epistemically successful just in case they fulfill the primary aim of knowledgeability, an aim which in turn generates a host of secondary epistemic norms. The central features of the Teleological Account are these: it is compact...
متن کاملCorrespondence between probabilistic norms and fuzzy norms
In this paper, the connection between Menger probabilistic norms and H"{o}hle probabilistic norms is discussed. In addition, the correspondence between probabilistic norms and Wu-Fang fuzzy (semi-) norms is established. It is shown that a probabilistic norm (with triangular norm $min$) can generate a Wu-Fang fuzzy semi-norm and conversely, a Wu-Fang fuzzy norm can generate a probabilistic norm.
متن کاملOverview of Assertion-Based Verification and its Applications
Functional verification is a critical and timeconsuming task in complex VLSI designs. There are two main challenges to functional verification: the first is to insure that the input stimulus can control the function spots inside the design and the second is to insure that the errors can be observed at the design output(s). Over the years, assertion-based verification techniques have been playin...
متن کاملAssertion modeling and its role in clinical phenotype identification
This paper describes an approach to assertion classification and an empirical study on the impact this task has on phenotype identification, a real world application in the clinical domain. The task of assertion classification is to assign to each medical concept mentioned in a clinical report (e.g., pneumonia, chest pain) a specific assertion category (e.g., present, absent, and possible). To ...
